The Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling course is spread over 2 years. Candidates study for 36 weeks in each year. The qualification is intended for candidates who want to train to become a counsellor working in a counselling service agency. There are many different agencies and many types of associated counselling services, but all agencies should provide the trainee with a service framework that includes both a line manager and clinical supervision. Successful completion of this course means that you will be able to provide a therapeutic counselling service – initially within the context of an agency service's framework, but later (with experience and support from your supervisor) you may progress to independent practice.
Students must have completed 90 hours of counselling skills training AND 90 hours of counselling theory training. In addition, candidates must:
Identify reasons for training beyond just personal development.
- Possess the ability to form a helping relationship.
- Be academically and emotionally able to cope with this level of training.
- Able to work with difference and diversity.
- Have self-awareness, insight, honesty and the ability to make links.
- Possess emotional stability and the absence of personal disturbance.
- Ability to challenge and be challenged.
- Ability to respond sensitively and empathically to others.
Over the 2 years of the course, candidates are required to have:
A minimum of 40 hours of personal therapy. Candidates are required to have continuous weekly personal therapy by week 4 of the course in the first year. The cost of this will vary and will be negotiated between the candidate and their chosen therapist selected from our list of acceptable practitioners. Candidates can expect to pay between £30-£45 per hour in addition to the cost of the course.
A minimum of 14 hours of clinical supervision. The cost of this will vary and will be negotiated between the candidate and their chosen supervisor from our list of acceptable practitioners. Candidates can expect to pay between £35-£50 per hour in additional to the cost of the course.
Candidates will be required to become student members of a professional organisation. The cost for this is in addition to the cost of the course.
